Building Skills for Open RAN Innovation

The UP Open RAN Lab Training ended from July 7 to 11, 2025. During this time, UP EEEI hosted the sessions in Quezon City. Earlier this year, a soft launch took place on January 15, 2025. In addition, the U.S. Government funded the project through the BEACON program. Several groups joined the effort, including Nathan Associates and AORA. As a result, participants learned global practices in Open RAN.

Strengthening the Digital Core

VIAVI Solutions delivered a complete solution for the BEACON program. Meanwhile, Ark One Solutions handled local system setup and integration. Although the project paused earlier this year, work resumed in May. After that, both teams completed setup in time for training.

A Milestone Sealed Through Training

During the sessions, Mohanavamsi Gorantla shared insights on 5G and O-RAN testing. At the same time, the lab showed its tools for network testing. The setup includes multi-vendor systems, TM500, and TeraVM tools. Because of these tools, users can test networks in real scenarios. Hands-on sessions helped participants build practical skills. For example, Tzeh Yeu Leang showed how UE Emulators simulate real traffic. In addition, Engr. Jemimah Batomalaque guided users with signal analysis tools. Therefore, attendees improved their RF testing skills.

Collaboration Across Sectors

Many groups joined the training, including UP EEEI, DICT, and DOST teams. Likewise, AORA and Ark One Solutions supported the sessions. Key participants attended both onsite and online. Because of this setup, knowledge sharing reached more people.

Empowering the Future of Connectivity

By August 1, 2025, the UP Open RAN Lab Training leads to the official launch. After the training, the lab is ready for research and learning. The facility supports open and secure telecom systems. As a result, the Philippines can grow its digital skills. At the same time, the lab helps improve local telecom innovation. Ultimately, this effort strengthens the country’s digital future.
